Impel Clothing | Dresses

I had the chance to photograph for Impel Clothing again! We headed to Park City and shot in a gorgeous (and gigantic) home. The lovely models were the winners of Impel’s Adorable You contest, and they did a fabulous job! We photographed Impel’s new line of dresses (as well as the their new Spring Line which you’ll have to wait to see!).

LOVE the pockets on this one. What’s better than pockets in a dress? Nothing.

These dresses would also be fun as bridesmaid dresses, no?

Choosing Wedding Colors

I was browsing today and came across The Inspired Bride blog. You must check it out. My favorite thing they post is color choice collages. So many ideas on how to mix and match color. And let me tell you, from a photographer’s perspective, color is FABULOUS! Bright, poppy colors can really add that extra punch to photographs. So, as you start planning your wedding (or even your next family picture), keep color in mind. Don’t be afraid to mix and match colors and have fun with it! Here’s a few that I really loved:

Aren’t they GORGEOUS combinations? I think they all could easily double as fabulous clothing color choices for engagements, or family or children’s portraits, don’t you?

Fashion Guide: What to wear for family portraits II

Okay, so remember how I was going to post photos from my own family shoot showcasing the clothes I posted? Well, here they finally are! Sorry that took so long. As you can see, I swapped out Audrey’s white cardigan for a grey (or is it gray? why does this word have two spellings?) one.

Also, I know that it’s now freezing cold outside, but I’m sure there are a few warmer days left, and there is still time to do family pictures! Or, just wait for the snow to come and do pictures in the SNOW. I love a good snow pic for a Christmas card!!

Fashion Guide: What to Wear for Family Portraits

Now that we are in our new house, and Audrey is actually old enough to pose (sort-of), I decided it was time for me to get some of my own family pictures! My heart goes out to all of you moms who have gone through the process of deciding what to wear, as I now truly understand what a hassle it is. After finally finding what I wanted us to wear, I decided that I would post it here (first just the clothes, then the actual photo of us as soon as we have it taken). I’ll start with my own family outfits, but I plan to continue doing these posts for all types of sessions just to give you some ideas.

My biggest tip for outfitting your family is to mix and match. Get things that coordinate, but not necessarily match. I also suggest wearing things that add texture (embellished shirts or cardigans, jeans, jewelry, scarves, etc). It’s hard to tell from this photo (since I had to lay the outfits on the grass, making the white super reflective of the noon sun–we will not be shooting at noon for the fam pics so they won’t be blown out!), but my tank has a few ruffles and Audrey’s cardi is embellished with rosettes. Layers (such as cardigans, jackets, and vests) are great as well. Skirts for the girls mixed with jeans for the guys are fun. You can definitely add patterns (like Jake’s shirt) here and there, just use it sparingly. Ties and hats can also add an extra fun element.

Once you’ve made your selections, I would suggest laying out your selections together as I have done. After snapping these photos, I realized that I want a little more color and will probably add more colorful accessories to my outfit (like bright green earrings or a colorful necklace). Bright pops of color here and there (such as red shoes, a deep purple belt, or mustard yellow cardigan) photograph really well.

Lastly, think of where the photograph will be displayed. Will the colors you have chosen complement the colors of the room? What about the colors of the season and the location? I chose to incorporate green into our photo (both in our clothing as well as the location–shooting now rather than in the fall colors) since I know that green will look great in my living room.

Hopefully these tips help and get you thinking as we near our family portrait season. If you find yourself overwhelmed, let me know and I’d be happy to help out by giving advice or sharing my opinion.

As a photographer, I get a lot of ideas of shoots I want to try, things I want to experiment with, etc., but I never have time to do them! Don’t get me wrong. I’m not complaining that I’m busy with all my fabulous clients, but I realized that it had been quite some time since I’d shot just for me. Thanks to my new assistant extraordinaire Kayti, I finally did! I had been envisioning this shoot for quite some time, and when I mentioned it to Kayti, she said, “Let’s do it!” She lined up her fabulous cousin Tiffany to be our model (Tiffany is a also hairstylist, so if you need a great cut or new style, just let me know and I’ll give you her info!). For the location we headed out to this great old house in Payson that my parents are fixing up (sort of wish I had the money to buy it myself and keep it in its run-down state!). The shoot didn’t go quite as I’d envisioned–couldn’t get the lighting quite how I wanted it–but I had fun and got to be creative, so the goal was met!

P.S. I did this shoot before attending Zack Arias’ OneLight Workshop (phenomenal), and now I have to laugh to think of all the things I did wrong (lighting wise) during this shoot! Live and learn, I guess.
